5000 Adivasi agitator under the banner of ANCC, a conglomerate of 13 Adivasi organisations raised the demand of ST status on Monday morning at Kokrajhar railway station disrupting the movement of trains in the state.
The long run demand of ST status of the Adivasis of Assam is being recognised by the political parties like Congress and BJP but nothing has come to reality. NDA government has considering ST status for six tribal communities in Assam including the Adivasis, Koch Rajbongshis, Chutiyas, Morans, Motoks and Tai Ahoms but the matter is stuck at the Register General of India’s office.
Assam does not recognize Adivasis as ST while in other parts of country they fall in ST category. Moreove,r these community is being termed as Tea tribe in Assam.
The Adivasi community comprises various sub-tribes, including the Mundas, Kharias, Orangs and Santhals who were brought from the Chotanagpur region to work in the Tea Plantation of Assam by the Britishers.
