ST status for the six communities of Assam seems to be fulfilling with the setting up of a committee by the Centre on Tuesday.
The move came after a meeting between a delegation of six communities from Assam and Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju.
Mahesh Kumar Singla, Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Home Ministry will head the committee. In consultation with Assam government the committee will suggest the modalities for the required reservations and shifting the existing reservation for these communities from OBC to ST.
The committee will submit its report by May 31.
With the grant of ST status to six communities Assam will turn into tribal dominated state. 50 per cent of population will come under tribal category, which will also increase the number of ST seats in the 126-member Assam assembly. Currently Assam has 16 seats reserved for ST.
Further, Assam poll might get interesting with a lot announcements coming in series from the NDA run central government as well as Congress run state government.
