The Bhumij tribal community demands official status for their language and recognition of their script "Ol Onol".

The tribals people mostly from Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts took out a procession from railway station under the banner of Adim Sindhu Basi Bhumij Munda 9 Mahal and held a meeting at Lower PMG.

Gulap Singh, the leader of the community says that the language, culture and tradition of their community are unique and rich yet the state government has not recognized it. The state has started multilingual education (MLE) programme in primary schools to impart lessons to tribal kids in their own mother tongue but Bhumij is not included in the programme as it lacks the government's recognition added Singh.

He also cited that the dropout rate has been increasing as the children of Bhumij community are getting education in other languages.

Sudarshan Bhumij national president of All India Bhumij Education, Social Cultural Council (AIBESCC) says that Jharkhand government has recognized their language and has appointed teachers in schools to teach their kids in Bhumij, but Odisha has not taken any steps in this regard.

AIBESCC state president Anil Munda said the state government should recognize "Ol Onal" script of their language and prepare study materials for Bhumij kids. Teachers should be appointed from their community to teach kids in Bhumij language in primary schools, he added.
