Congratulations to Purnima Hembram from Johar Times!

India’s Santal Adivasi girl Purnima Hembram has brought laurels to India by winning gold in the women’s pentathlon event at the 5th Asian Martial Arts Games at Ashgabat in Turkmenistan on 17th September.

Pentathlon is a combined track and field event in which each athlete competes in five separate events. The distance or time for each event is converted to points via scoring tables, with the overall ranking determined by total points. The events has sprint hurdling, high jump, shot put, long jump, and a flat race. Purnima scored a total of 4062 points to bag the gold.

Purnima Hembram hails from Mayurbhanj district in the state of Odisha. In the past, Hembram has won the Asian championship bronze medal in 2015 and 2017 and Asian Junior Champion in 2012. In 2017 Hembram was given a grant of 300,000 rupees on 1 July just before the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships by Orissa Chief minister Naveen Patnaik. In the past, Hembram was declared Biju Patnaik Sportsman of the Year in 2015 for her exceptional performance in the sports.
